digital preservation

Suppose in a small library setting(school, public or a specialized collection) a new librarian-with a technical services flair finds a vast collection of “CD Rom”, DVD’s/CD’s/other storage devices that have been made over the years. How does this organization embark on preservation of digital materials. I’d like to explore this by looking through the literature, find examples of current practice, and share that in a final paper that would include a plan of action for the fictional small library.

Ayanna,
I’m sorry to have not responded more quickly to this idea for youru final paper. The proposal or topic is sound, yet the final product fits more with the intent of the individual project than the final synthesis paper. The emphasis on the final paper is on the word “synthesis” — the pulling together of various overarching themes throughout the course. One example of this is the impact that technology has had, and will continue to have, on technical services functions. Or how tech. svcs.’ role has changed vis-a-vis other library roles. Does this make sense?
Actually as I re-read your posting it became clear to me that you are meaning this to be for the individual project after all, so forgive my confusion in the previous paragraph! I think this works very well for the individual project assignment.

I will carry on then-Individual projects seems to be digital preservation/collection development contingency plans—what have institutions done to handle the issues in format change( migration), how can information be “sustainably accessible” in small library settings with limited funding?
